M. Nelson

My practicum and student teaching experiences have given me the opportunity to grow as an individual and as a teacher. I believe teaching is my opportunity to inspire students. Give an example of one previous experience (good or bad) in the school setting and explain how this experience has helped you to become a better individual/teacher.

  1. I was lucky enough to have great collaborating teachers during my student teaching and practicums. They were very helpful teaching me some tricks of the trade to help my students. They taught me about touch math. This has benefited my struggling math students tremendously. I really simplifies procedures for them. In addition, I was given blank copies of forms I would be using in my career as a teacher attached to copies of forms that described in detail what I was to do with each form. Most of all I was not treated like an errand/copy girl. Every teacher on my grade leve was welcoming and allowed me to teach without interfering. They were very respectful and treated me in a friendly, professional way. Overall I had amazing student teaching and practicum expieriences.

  2. This past semester, I had the opportunity to be in a preschool class with a very positive teacher. She was helpful and concerned about my coursework and responsibilities as a student. She let me do what I needed to do without feeling pressed for time. She showed me many things that I would use throughout my teaching career. I was thankful to be placed in her hands. I hope to be a positive and helpful teacher like she was. She inspired me to do my best and remain fair to all of the students. I hope my next school experience (which will be my student teaching) will be as good as my last experience.

  3. My previous experience in the school setting has given me opportunities to learn about students and provide them with different learning styles based on their individual needs. Pearl Haskew has a great team of teachers and students. I enjoyed working with the teachers and students.

  4. Teaching Fifth grade was an experience that I will never forget as long as I live. The students were my pride and joy, but a certain situation occured that made me realize that I am a strong teacher/individual. I must however admit that I would not have made it through that situation without GOD and, great grade level teachers. This certain event made me realize that it is ok to cry as a teacher/human, and that at some point in our lives beyond childhood, we have to have someone to depend on!!!

  5. I was very happy to be placed with such a great team of teachers. My collaborating teacher did inclusion with fifth grader teachers. I was able to teach whole group and small group lessons. I attended grade level meetings and data meetings. The teachers made me feel like family and the students were awesome and well disiciplined.
